Kids on the Move: Physical Therapy for Motor Skills Development

Every child deserves the opportunity to move, explore, and play with confidence. But for some kids, mastering motor skills can be a challenge. That’s where physical therapy for motor skills development comes in!
Motor skills are critical for daily activities like walking, writing, and tying shoes. Pediatric physical therapy offers targeted support to help children develop these skills, whether they’re struggling with gross motor skills (like running and jumping) or fine motor skills (like grasping objects).
In this blog, we’ll explore how physical therapy for motor skills development can make a difference for kids by sharing the stories of two Hands On Physical Therapy patients.
Meet Lucas: A Journey to Improved Motor Skills
At three years old, Lucas loved coloring and playing with his toy cars. Unfortunately, he struggled to keep up with his friends on the playground. He had difficulty running, climbing, and balancing on the equipment.
When his mom noticed Lucas hanging back during playground trips and not joining in on the fun, she scheduled an appointment with the Hands On Physical Therapy team.
Lucas’s Personalized Treatment Plan
We began Lucas’s treatment with a comprehensive assessment to identify areas where he needed extra support. We found that Lucas’s lack of coordination stemmed from muscular weakness, especially in his core and lower body.
We created a series of play-based strengthening activities to address this weakness, like jumping on soft mats and climbing steps. These exercises helped build his core and leg muscles. As Lucas got stronger, we introduced balance-focused games, like walking on a balance beam, to help him improve his stability.
To help Lucas combine these newly learned skills, we would have him complete fun obstacle courses, all designed so he could practice his coordination and balance in a fun, engaging way.
With consistent therapy, Lucas began to build the confidence and skills he needed to participate in playtime with his friends. Soon, he was keeping up with his peers on the playground–and sometimes, he even led the charge!
Meet Emma: Mastering the Little Things
Like many five-year-olds, Emma loved drawing pictures. However, she often struggled to hold her crayons properly, which was one of the first signs her parents noticed that Emma struggled with fine motor skills. Soon, they noticed other difficulties: Emma had a hard time zipping up her jacket and learning to tie her shoes. Her handwriting also wasn’t improving as expected.
That’s when they brought Emma into Hands On Physical Therapy.
Emma’s Personalized Treatment Plan
We created a plan to improve Emma’s fine motor skills by targeting hand strength, finger coordination, and precision.
We began with hand-strengthening activities, such as using therapy putty and squeezing stress balls to improve grip strength. We also had regular bracelet-making sessions in which Emma threaded beads onto strength, an activity that helped improve her finger dexterity.
Because Emma loved to draw, we also incorporated other art-based activities into her plan, such as drawing shapes on a vertical surface, painting with different brushes, and making sculptures out of clay.
With encouragement and consistent practice, Emma’s hand skills improved significantly. Soon, her teachers reported that her handwriting had improved, and Emma’s drawing became more detailed and complex.
